Application

Typically used for the initial application for a credential.

Appellate

Some programs allow credentialing decisions to be appealed. The appeals application uses the “Appellate” type to differentiate it from the original application.

Maintenance

Typically used for recertification or “maintenance of certification” applications in which an existing Practitioner must regularly take action to remain licensed or credentialed.

Administrative Task

Represents a process that does not provide or confer a credential. Typically this is used for things like a name change application, requesting a certificate reprint, etc.
