Competency Models

Competency Models

Summary

Competency Models allow LearningBuilder entities, such as Activities, to be classified against a hierarchical set of competencies or learning domains.

Once classified, application submission requirements such as “at least <n> hours of training focused on <competency>” to be configured.

Overview

The continuing competence model asserts that practitioners are qualified when they can demonstrate competence on an on-going basis.

LearningBuilder supports this model by:

  • Defining “Competency Models” that represent various skills or competencies

  • Identifying which competencies or skills various Activities represent

  • Enforcing submission rules based upon those skills or competencies

  • Helping practitioners locate learning activities that target specific skill gaps

To get the most out of Competency Models in LearningBuilder, configure them as part of a Reflective Practice Exercise (RPE).

Using Competency Models

The competency model feature is located in the Admin > Credentials area.

A competency model is defined by different tiers or levels that can be configured.

The depth of a Competency Model specifies how many layers of nesting will be used, and this cannot be changed once set.

After the Competency Model is created, you will need to add some Competencies to it.

The Competency Model editor will not prevent you from defining a model using too few or too many levels of nesting.

However, doing so will cause issues with the Reflective Practice Exercise (RPE)as it requires three levels.

Please be mindful of this when configuring the Competency Model.

Once a model is configured it can be used to define a competency requirement model or position profile.

Configuration notes

  • The Reflective Practice Exercise (RPE) requires a configured three-level competency model to operate correctly.

  • The Assessment feature also requires a competency model, but is just needed as a placeholder and the model does not need to be fully configured.
